SQUASHING FIRST DAY JITTERSBefore the year even starts we organize a handful of informal summer playdates.
These gatherings give students a chance to make new buddies on the playground and help parents begin building their North Star community well before August.
Just before the school year kicks off, we host a special Maze Day exclusively for our incoming third graders.
Held just a few days before the first day of school, this dedicated orientation gives students and families plenty of space and time to walk the grounds and get oriented.
To kick off third grade, our students spend the first week rotating through all three third-grade classrooms. It’s a wonderful way for the kids to shake off the first-day jitters, explore their surroundings, and meet all three teachers.
Behind the scenes, our educators use this time to carefully craft balanced classroom communities where every child will flourish. Once the roster puzzle is solved, official classroom assignments are shared, setting up the entire grade for a connected and supportive year ahead.
Friendships: One of the best ways new kids plug in is through our House System. Elementary and middle schoolers are teamed up for mentorship and activities. It’s an easy, high-energy way for new students to make friends across grade levels.
Academic Catch-up: Students joining us in later grades occasionally encounter a learning curve, particularly as they adapt to our accelerated math sequence. Our teachers partner closely with every student to bridge any curriculum gaps, build confidence, and ensure they are learning at a pace that feels both supportive and challenging. We also offer an optional after-school homework club.
Also Check This Out: We have a fun student publications offering in the years we teach the class. You can find some of our scholars' creative work here, which showcases students' perspective about what being a scholar at North Star is all about.
Families quickly become part of the fabric of North Star through our favorite community traditions:
Beloved Traditions: The annual Fall Festival, Science Night, Multi-cultural Festival, and the Night at North Star campout give new families a chance to experience their new community. We also offer grade-level socials and chaperone opportunities.
Arts & Theater: We are the only school in the district to offer two drama productions: the fall play and spring musical. There's plenty of opportunity to be a part of this vibrant theatrical community.
Parent Community: We have a robust Parent Club with plenty of volunteer opportunities to plug into, and a dedicated, active Dads Club.
Monthly Community "Coffee Connections": A chance to grab a coffee with the principal and other parents, hear updates, and discuss issues.
As students move through the grades, their daily schedule naturally evolves alongside their independence.
Third graders spend their year anchored in a single classroom with their cohort, creating a stable, close-knit home base just as they've been doing in their years before North Star.
In the upper grades, students begin transitioning between subject classrooms while staying together with their familiar class group. By 7th and 8th grade, students step into a dynamic middle school experience, switching rooms with mixed cohorts.
Passing periods are thoughtfully timed across all grades, giving students ample time to visit lockers and transition smoothly between classrooms.
Our enrichment program gives students space to explore new passions, think creatively, and build skills beyond the standard curriculum. Because learning styles and social dynamics evolve as kids grow, we structure these opportunities intentionally by division.
Third Grade Foundations: Third graders stay anchored in their primary classrooms, exploring hands-on, creative enrichment projects, such as sewing and applied crafts, within their familiar cohort. This keeps their routine stable and supportive as they transition to life at North Star.
Upper Elementary Explorations: Fourth and fifth graders mix across grade levels, coming together to try new pursuits, collaborate with different peers, and dive into shared interests.
Middle School Electives: Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders learn side by side in shared courses. It is common to see a 6th grader and an 8th grader partnering over a chessboard or debugging code together.
North Star Academy shares a historic Redwood City campus with McKinley Institute of Technology (MIT). While we share the same grounds and key facilities, including cafeteria, gym, outdoor spaces and athletic fields, each school operates as its own distinct community with dedicated administrators, faculty, and classrooms.
Daily recess and lunch schedules are carefully staggered to ensure little to no overlap, allowing our students to enjoy the energy of a bustling, active campus while preserving North Star’s close-knit, focused academic culture.
There are several ways we communicate with our community:
Weekly Newsletter: Our newsletter is designed for busy parents and students who want to quickly skim for the most impactful news. Click here to browse them!
Parent Club: The heartbeat of our family community. We organize campus traditions, coordinate volunteer efforts, and host regular meetings where parents can connect, share input, and support school enrichment.
Konstella: Our primary parent-to-parent and school-to-home communication platform.
Dads Club: A fun, casual group focused on hands-on campus projects, social gatherings, and community events.
Site Council: A collaborative leadership team composed of the principal, teachers, staff, and elected parent representatives.
Teacher newsletters/emails: A direct window into your student’s day-to-day academic world.
