North Star begins in 3rd grade to meet this critical need with a compacted curriculum.

At this age, children's cognitive reasoning stabilizes and basic literacy evolves into deeper intellectual inquiry. Assessing students in second grade yields more reliable results than kindergarten testing.
Third grade marks the standard curricular transition to abstract problem-solving, making compacted curriculum developmentally appropriate at this stage.
Universal second-grade screening in the classroom also ensures equitable access, identifying accelerated learners who might otherwise be missed before kindergarten.
